How Dental Bridges Can Help You Smile With Confidence

Do you have one or more missing teeth? There is help available at Moncton Dental! Our office places dental bridges in Richmond, BC for patients who would like to improve their smiles. You don't have to hide your smile out of embarrassment any longer – after you visit our office, we're confident that you'll be grinning at every opportunity!

Dental bridges are fixed prosthetic devices designed to treat the gaps left from missing teeth. These teeth may be missing due to an accident, advanced dental decay or other damage. Bridges do much more than fill a gap in your smile, however. They also help you:

  • Maintain your facial shape, which can become hollow or sag due to missing teeth
  • Keep your remaining teeth in the proper position
  • Allow you to eat and speak normally
  • Improve your bite

These dental appliances will also make a big impact on your self-esteem. Schedule a consultation with your dentist today to learn more about how dental bridges can help you!

How is a Dental Bridge Placed?
Dental bridges commonly work in conjunction with dental crowns. Two crowns will be placed on the teeth located on either side of the gap to create sturdy attachment points for the bridge, which contains replacement teeth used to complete your smile.

You should expect two trips to the dentist for dental bridges in Richmond, BC. The first visit includes preparing the teeth, making a mould of your mouth and placing a temporary bridge. The mould will be used by a dental lab to craft your permanent dental bridge, which will be cemented into place at the second visit. Please note that some minor adjustments may be required to fit the new appliance into your existing bite. With some patience and proper care, your dental bridge can last for several years before a replacement will be needed due to daily wear and tear. It is important to brush and floss twice a day and regularly visit your dentist.

Types of Dental Bridges
There are four types of dental bridges commonly used by dentists. They include:

  • Traditional Bridges: This type is the most popular and features one or more artificial teeth. You must have natural teeth remaining on either side of the gap.
  • Cantilever Bridges: If you only have one natural tooth next to a gap in the front of your mouth, this type of bridge could be an option.
  • Maryland Bridges: With Maryland bridges, the artificial tooth or teeth will be held in place by metal or porcelain framework that is bonded onto the back of the teeth next to the gap. Crowns are not used in this procedure.
  • Implant-Supported Bridges: If you have multiple missing teeth in a row, this could be an option instead of a removable denture.

Your dentist will examine your mouth and recommend a type of bridge depending on your unique needs.
